Málaga Christmas lights 2026: Calle Larios dates, light shows and how to visit from La Cala de Mijas

The Málaga Christmas lights 2026 are expected to switch on Friday 27 November at 18:30 on Calle Larios (expected, to be confirmed by Málaga city council) and stay lit until 6 January 2027. There are usually three light-and-music shows a night. From La Cala de Mijas it is about 38 km, roughly 35 to 40 minutes by car or 45 minutes by train from Fuengirola.

Every December our guests ask: “Is it really worth driving into Málaga for the lights?” Yes. Calle Larios is one of the most photographed Christmas streets in Europe, and seeing it after a sunny day on the beach is a small pleasure of a winter break here.

When do the Málaga Christmas lights 2026 switch on?

Málaga traditionally lights up on the last Friday of November. For 2026 that points to Friday 27 November, from 18:30, but the council normally only confirms the date and theme in autumn. Treat it as expected, to be confirmed by Málaga city council, and check the official Málaga tourism site before you plan the evening.

From recent years:

  • Switch-on night draws enormous crowds. Lovely atmosphere, but not the night for small children or anyone who dislikes queues.
  • Lights on from 18:30 until midnight Sunday to Wednesday, until 02:00 Thursday to Saturday and on the eve of holidays, and much later on 24 and 31 December.
  • Lights off at midnight on 6 January, after Three Kings Day.
  • Theme: 2025 introduced “A Nativity of Light”, with illuminated nativity medallions along Larios. The 2026 design was not yet announced when we wrote this.

The Calle Larios light show: times and what to expect

The famous part is the show: for a few minutes the whole street pulses in sync with Christmas music. In 2025 the shows ran at 18:30, 20:30 and 22:00 every night, with none on 24 and 31 December. Expect a similar pattern in 2026 and confirm the times once published.

Our tips:

  • Go on a weekday and aim for the last show. The 18:30 show is the busiest because families with young children come early.
  • Avoid 6 to 8 December (a long holiday weekend in Spain) and December weekends if you want breathing room.
  • Make an evening of it. The Alameda Principal is lit like a glowing forest, the big tree stands in Plaza de la Constitución, and the Paseo del Parque Christmas market (in 2025 from 1 December to 7 January) has wooden stalls with nativity figures and gifts. The municipal belén in the Town Hall courtyard is free and impressive.
  • Eat late. We book a table for 21:00 and catch the 22:00 show on the way back.

Getting there from La Cala de Mijas

Option Time What to know
Car via A-7 / AP-7 35 to 40 min (38 km) Park at Muelle Uno or Alcazaba, both a few minutes’ walk from Larios. Around 2 euros per hour in 2025.
Bus M-220 to Fuengirola, then C-1 train About 1 h 15 min total Bus every 30 min; train every 20 min, 45 min to Málaga Centro-Alameda.
Taxi 35 to 40 min Handy for the return after the 22:00 show.

By car. Follow the A-7 or the AP-7 toll motorway east, then the signs for the centre and the port. The Muelle Uno car park (Paseo de la Farola) is our usual choice, a five-minute walk to Calle Larios; Alcazaba is the other reliable option. Both were roughly 2 euros an hour in 2025 and fill up after 19:00 on weekends. Do not drive into the old town itself; the streets are closed.

By public transport. Take the M-220 bus from the Boulevard de La Cala (outside the tourist office) to the Fuengirola bus terminal, walk across to the train station, and take the Cercanías C-1 to Málaga Centro-Alameda, a five-minute walk from Larios. The catch is the way back: the last train leaves Málaga around 23:30, but the last M-220 from Fuengirola is around 22:30 (earlier on Sundays). If you stay for the 22:00 show, plan on a taxi for the final leg from Fuengirola, or take the 20:30 show instead.

Christmas in La Cala de Mijas itself

You do not have to leave the village for festive atmosphere. Mijas switches on its own lights in early December (in 2025 on 3, 4 and 5 December for Mijas Pueblo, La Cala and Las Lagunas), and La Cala’s Boulevard and Mijas Pueblo’s main square then run small light-and-sound shows in the evenings until 6 January.

Mijas Pueblo is the place for belenes. The village hosts an annual nativity scene exhibition, and the whitewashed streets with lights strung between the houses are worth an afternoon on their own; our Mijas Pueblo day trip guide has the bus and parking details.

The other date to circle is 5 January, the Cabalgata de Reyes. Mijas runs three Three Kings parades that evening; La Cala’s sets off in the late afternoon (17:30 in 2026) and ends on the Boulevard, with floats, bands and an astonishing quantity of sweets thrown to children. It is the emotional peak of Christmas for Spanish families, and far easier than the Málaga crowds.

For a family Christmas, the penthouse Apartment Harmony in La Cala Golf sleeps 6 inside the resort, with a proper kitchen for Christmas dinner. Book direct and save 10%; and if you would rather not cook, the restaurants of La Cala are open most of the season.
